Safety will be the central theme of discussion at this year’s Europe Forum, as influential figures and political, financial and research experts gather in Turku to discuss the current challenges faced by Finland and Europe between 28 August and 30 August 2024. The Europe Forum will be opened by Prime Minister Petteri Orpo.

The three-day event will offer a broad range of perspectives on the security theme, focusing on topics such as geopolitical safety, sustainability and economic safety.

– We have returned to the basics of European integration: promoting peace and defending our values. This year’s theme of securing a safe future fits well with this idea, says Prime Minister Petteri Orpo.

– The Europe Forum in Turku is the most important arena for the Finnish EU debate. Strengthening the public debate on EU matters is especially important in these times, when the security situation in Europe has tightened and we have giant projects like the green and digital transition in front of us, emphasizes the mayor of Turku, Minna Arve.

Geopolitical safety will be discussed at panels dealing with the EU’s foreign and security policy, Finland’s role in the EU and in NATO as well as EU expansion and the war in Ukraine. The sustainability and security component will focus on the green transition and climate policy, issues related to nature and the environment, a social Europe as well as scientific and cultural policies. With regard to economic security, security of supply, strategic autonomy and the economic and industrial policies of the EU and Finland will be discussed.

– This year, the Europe Forum brings decision-makers, EU experts, international guests and citizens together to ponder an important question: how can we ensure a secure future for Europe? The upcoming EU elections and the start of a new Commission’s term in office present an opportunity for a broader reflection on the direction of the EU from different perspectives, says Matti Niemi, Chair of Eurooppa-Foorumi Turussa ry.

The programme will be updated during the spring and summer.

Participate on-site or online

As in previous years, this year’s event will feature a large number of ministers and newly elected MEPs as well as scientific, economic, and political experts participating in the discussion of topical matters. The programme of the Europe Forum also offers many opportunities for young people to participate in the discussion. This year, the event will be held at Turku City Theatre. The entire three-day event can also be attended live online. The programmes are interpreted in English.

Once again, the Europe Forum responds to a current need for a European debate. For the seventh time, the event invites top people from Finland and abroad to debate politics, business, research and matters related to the civil society.
